Hootle privacy policy
Last updated: 20 October 2026
Hootle is a Mac menu bar app that keeps your Mac awake while it's turned on. This policy explains what the app uses on your Mac and what happens to it.
The short version
- Hootle does not collect, store or share any personal data.
- Hootle makes no network connections. It works entirely on your Mac.
- There are no accounts, ads, analytics or tracking.
What the app uses
To do its job, Hootle uses two macOS features, both on your Mac only:
- Power management. While Hootle is on, it asks macOS not to sleep, turn off the display or start the screen saver. When you turn Hootle off or quit it, that request is removed and your normal settings apply again.
- Idle time. To decide whether to remind you that it has been on for a long time, Hootle reads how many seconds have passed since the keyboard, mouse or trackpad was last used. It reads only this number. It does not see which keys you press, what you click, or anything on your screen. The number is checked in memory and never saved.
What is stored
Nothing. Hootle keeps no files, history or settings about you. Whether it is on or off, and any turn-off timer you choose, exist only while the app is running.
What is shared
Nothing. Hootle does not send data to the developer or to any third party.
Children
Hootle collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Hootle changes what it uses, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
